Over 60% of students in higher education report high level of stress, anxiety or depression

Young adults making the transition into adult life are particularly vulnerable to toxic stress, especially with the added pressure of university life. Year on year, students are reporting more mental health and wellbeing concerns.

In 2024, over 60% of students in higher education reported high levels of stress, anxiety or depression, with 37% of first-year students in England experiencing moderate to severe symptoms of depression or anxiety - nearly double the rate of 16 - 29 year olds (ONS, 2024).

Between 2000 - 2020, 1,554 students died by suicide in England and Wales (ONS, 2022).

Students suffering from toxic stress and trauma are at particular risk of developing a range of mental health problems. Young people and adults living with chronic stress and stress-related illnesses are prone to violence, crime, substance misuse, ill-health and suicide. These factors compromise the effectiveness of education, health care, rehabilitation, and vocational programmes.

Just 12% of UK university students said they were satisfied with the way their university handled their mental health issue. (The Tab National Student Mental Health Survey, 2022/23)
